Stop buttons for human being

Posted by: gany44 on: August 12, 2010

When you get on a bus in Seoul, you could see this button, called “Stop button only for the disabled, not for normal people”.
I don’t know why stop buttons are seperated for the disabled and normal people. I’d like to point out some problem in this system.

1. This kind of button is not “kind”.
How do the disabled feel when they look at the discription of the button. Do they really feel good? It’s just one of discrimination. There are not stop buttons for the disabled or normal people. There are buttons just for “human”.

2. It’s not a efficient system.
I’ve pushed the button once unintentionally. At the moment, the bus driver was very angry with me. For the first time, I didn’t know why. After a while, I could realize it, and I couldn’t blame the driver. The reason was that if the button once was pushed, the bus driver had to do something more. It means when “normal” stop buttons are pushed, and the buttons are on, then a bus driver only needs to open and close a door, and the stop button will be off. Simple. However, if the stop button for the disabled was pushed, the bus driver should not only open and close a door, but also switch on some safety system for the disabled. Before the system is on and off, the stop button won’t be off. Stop buttons for the disabled are only bothring the bus driver.

These are based on the point of view to seperate stop buttons for the disabled and normal people. Stop buttons are just stop buttons. Do not treat the disabled special carelessly.
